And just like that we're at the end of August! I can't believe my little man is already five months old! He's off the penicillin since Saturday (thank God!!) and quite back to his old self! I can't say I'm not glad to see the last of that particular period. Life is decidedly back to normal and back on schedule, and I couldn't be more pleased! We took Ricky to the baby clinic on Monday for his monthly weigh-in. He seems to actually enjoy it - the sisters love him! - and just grinned and bounced on my lap the whole time. He is now 8.05kg and 67cm tall, my big boy! After chatting to the sister, I've decided to start weaning him from the breast, slowly. I plan on breastfeeding up to his first birthday, but he's on second foods now, and needs to learn to rely on solids over milk for a full tummy, so there go the pre-meal milk feeds. He's also been introduced to a whole lot of new flavours and textures, and we're yet come across a food he doesn't like. So far, so good! Let's hope he keeps it up! *fingers crossed*
In other news, our champ is still sleeping through the night! It's now been a month and a half and going strong! I mentioned in my previous post about getting baby to sleep that we tune our radio to between stations for white noise, and this is certainly something that has helped Ricky, but it has become a bit of a problem of late... It would seem that South African radio is becoming somewhat densely populated, with new stations popping up where there were none a mere 24 hours earlier, only to seemingly disappear a few days later. It would also seem that the frequencies used to transmit said radio stations are really more of a guideline than a constant. For the last few nights Ricky has enjoyed the light sounds of the Spice Girls spliced with traditional Indian music and what I can only assume is talk radio in one of the remaining nine official languages of our fair country that I am not competent in. (As an aside: If I were allowed to chose a superpower, it would be the ability to understand, read, write and speak every language and dialect that exists on earth. I think that's pretty cool, but Rod assures me it's the lamest "superpower" ever. In case you would ever want to grant me a gift, I would also be okay with super-strength, or Wolverine's healing ability and adamantium skeleton.) Ricky's radio also has a knack for picking up the transmissions of nearby police radios, as we discovered late one night. The sound of a man's voice in your child's room, over the monitor, when your hubby is asleep next to you, is enough to make anyone audibly soil themselves. And while I'm sure some would be terribly fascinated to hear what our police actually discuss via the equipment our tax dollars buy, all I really seek is the gentle, fuzzy hum of empty airwaves.
And so we reach the crux of this post.
I have been threatening for weeks to find and download a few white noise tracks that I can burn to disc for our little man's nightly slumber, but in true new-mommy fashion, I may or may not have put that particular project on the back burner while I dealt with more pressing issues. But on Monday night, as I sat in the lounge listening to the amalgam of utter crap broadcast via the monitor, I decided it was time I made good on my silent promise to my son. A quick Google search led me to a website that has four varieties of white noise for free and easy download, and feeling generous, I thought I'd share the link with you. Just click here! Last night we used the white noise and heartbeat combo, and it seemed to do the trick! If you have any success with these or any other white noise tracks you've found, drop a comment in the section below - I'd love to hear from you!
Here's to no more cops invading my home!
Smiles,
Mommy
UPDATE: We canned the white noise CD. The waving nature of the tracks actually caused little man to wake up! So back to the good old radio static. I guess the cops are good for one thing, at least.
We downloaded a sonogram track off Itunes ... well worth the 99 us cents ;)
