If you know who these guys are, your childhood rocked! |
I love cartoons. I unashamedly admit that I am a bit of an old school cartoon junkie. I was one of those kids who would anxiously wait for my show to come on so that my parents could tape it for me to keep and rewatch a million and one times at my leisure. In fact, I still have seventeen VHS tapes in our TV cabinet from the late '80s filled with the sort of gems that are next to impossible to find today. The tape is stretched out and the sound is going, but they work well enough for me to remember how much I enjoyed what TV had to offer. Don't get me wrong, I was very much the tomboyish, outdoorsy sort, but when it came time for lunch, in went the next video and Blaine and I would sit down to enjoy a little bit of Smurf or Wuzzle action over our toasted cheese sarmies.

You know you loved it. Don't even try deny it. |
Twenty years on, I am still an avid fan of old school cartoons. When I see what kids these days have been offered under the guise of entertainment, my soul weeps. Gone are the days of innocence. Even the Smurfs reboot has been turned into a smutty nod to adulthood, a la Cow and Chicken, leaving kids making inappropriate jokes that they don't fully understand. Perhaps, at 28 years of age, I am too much of a prude, but I openly admit that I take umbrage at many of the shows currently on air for the amusement of our children. The world is too harsh a place for us to not allow our children the opportunity to BE children before they have to grow up and face it. And so began my quest to find the shows I watched as a child, so that Ricky may enjoy a bit of smut-free entertainment before he heads off to school to be jaded through the necessary course of education.

Who hasn't mixed up a batch of Gummi berry juice at second year archaeology camp? Oh, just me then? |
A few years back, before Rod and I even married, I was browsing the metal section at Look & Listen, and turned to find that it was shelved right next to the kids' DVD section. Good planning, Look & Listen! My curiosity lead me down that beaten path and I found myself staring at the first volume box set of The Gummi Bears. Oh happy day!! Since then I have been patiently waiting to buy the second volume, and now that Ricky has arrived I am on a mission to get them all! I've been searching high and low for The Wuzzles and, of course, DuckTales, too. But to no avail. Despite their popularity in past decades, it seems that the '80s resurgence we are currently witnessing is limited to fashion and home decor... And so I turned to my good and ever-helpful friend, The Interwebs, to find what no other could. I openly admit that I am not above downloading what I want, when I want it. I will gladly make a purchase to, you know, "support the artist", but I'd like to see my shows before the second coming. (Get with the program, South Africa!) And so I ended up at my favourite site, searching for my favourite childhood shows. And I found them! Full series of The Wuzzles and Duck Tales! And they work beautifully!
I can't wait until Ricky is old enough to watch some good, old-fashioned cartoons with his old mama! "I guess I'll just have to go it alone for a while", she said, not a hint of sadness in her voice. Ermagerd, so much of excite!!
Until next time, that's all, folks!
Smiles,
Mommy
